Proposed Stadium at Muktsar School Sparks Environmental Concerns Over Tree Loss
A proposal to build a sports stadium on the premises of the Government Senior Secondary School in Sukhna Ablu village, Muktsar, has drawn opposition from environmentalists and some local residents. They argue that the project threatens over a hundred fully grown trees, many of which line a corner of the school ground and a nearby pathway—areas that, according to them, do not interfere with any academic or sports activities.
Critics of the proposal claim it is being pushed in the name of development without adequate consideration of the environmental consequences. “The school premises aren't spacious enough to accommodate a full-fledged stadium. This decision lacks long-term vision. If a stadium is truly needed, it should be constructed elsewhere in the village,” said a former village sarpanch, adding that concerned villagers gathered at the school on Tuesday to discuss the matter.
On the other hand, some residents believe a stadium is essential and accuse opponents of politicizing the issue. “People remain silent when trees are cut for buildings, but now, when a stadium is merely proposed, there's an outcry. There’s no available panchayat land nearby, which is why the school ground has been selected. Once the project is approved, we will plant new trees as per government regulations,” one supporter said.
Responding to the controversy, Muktsar District Education Officer (DEO) Jaspal Monga clarified that the project is still in its early stages. “The school management committee has submitted a proposal to build a stadium within the campus, but no trees have been felled. We will first assess the trees to evaluate their condition before seeking clearance from the Forest Department,” he stated.
Monga added that student safety remains a top concern. “Some of the trees in question are bent and could pose risks. Any action will be taken only after a thorough assessment and in line with all necessary procedures,” he assured.
As discussions continue, the proposed stadium has become a point of contention between development and environmental preservation in the village.
