Chandigarh Court Restrains Minister Ravneet Bittu from Making Defamatory Statements Against Punjab Health Minister

A Chandigarh court has issued an interim order restraining Minister of State for Railways, Ravneet Singh Bittu, from making any further defamatory statements against Punjab Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh on social media platforms.

The order comes in response to a civil suit filed by Dr. Balbir, who alleged that Bittu made defamatory remarks in a YouTube video, accusing Punjab government ministers and MLAs of transporting state funds in official vehicles and depositing them at the official residence of the Punjab Chief Minister in New Delhi.

Representing Dr. Balbir, his counsel urged the court to prevent Bittu from continuing to issue defamatory content and requested that both Bittu and Google be directed to remove the existing video, citing serious harm to the minister’s reputation.

After reviewing the arguments and the evidence, which included the link to the alleged defamatory content posted by Bittu, the court ruled that an ad-interim injunction was necessary. The court noted that failing to pass such an order could defeat the purpose of the suit and cause further reputational damage to the plaintiff.

As a result, Bittu has been barred from posting any further defamatory material against Dr. Balbir on social media until further notice. The matter has been adjourned to April 16, 2025, with notices issued to Bittu and other defendants involved in the case.
