Harsimrat Kaur Badal Accuses BJP of Communal Politics During Debate on Waqf (Amendment) Bill

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal strongly criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during a Lok Sabha debate on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, accusing the ruling party of promoting communal politics. She claimed that BJP's political narrative is centered around “Pakistan, Musalman, and Khalistan.”

Speaking during the 12-hour-long session before the bill was passed with a 288–232 vote in the early hours of Thursday, Badal questioned the BJP’s sudden interest in Muslim affairs. “The party whose entire politics revolves around Hindu-Muslim polarisation... whose strategy hinges on Pakistan, Musalman, and Khalistan — how is it now talking about judiciously utilising Muslims’ money?” she said in the Lok Sabha.

Badal also pointed out that the BJP does not have a single Muslim MP in the current Lok Sabha, while all 24 parliamentarians opposing the bill belong to the opposition. She argued that the bill lacks inclusive representation and questioned the motive behind its timing.

Citing a research paper on Waqf asset management, she highlighted that 27% of Waqf land is located in Uttar Pradesh — a state scheduled to go to the polls within the next 18 months. She implied that the bill might be politically motivated to influence upcoming elections in the state.

“If the government is truly concerned about the welfare of minorities, then it should start by amending Article 25B of the Constitution,” Badal added, urging the government to show genuine commitment to minority rights rather than using them for electoral gain.

Meanwhile, Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju tabled the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, in the Rajya Sabha for further discussion.
