NIA Takes Over Probe Into Grenade Attack on BJP Leader Manoranjan Kalia’s Residence
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has officially taken over the investigation into the grenade attack on the residence of senior BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia, following two days of interrogation of the three arrested suspects.
The attack occurred in the early hours of April 8. Confirming the development, Jalandhar Commissioner of Police Dhanpreet Kaur said, “We have received the order for the NIA to take over the case. The process of transferring the investigation is now underway.” A team from the NIA has already begun questioning the three accused, including the prime suspect, 19-year-old Saidul Amin.
The other two arrested in the case are Satish Kumar Kaka, an auto-rickshaw driver, and his cousin Harry. All three were in police custody until Sunday. Saidul, a welder originally from Uttar Pradesh, was apprehended in Delhi on April 11 in a joint operation involving the Delhi Police, Jalandhar Police, and Central agencies. The NIA had also visited Kalia’s residence earlier this week to inspect the blast site.
Initial investigations pointed to possible involvement of Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI, in the attack. While the motive and wider network are still under investigation, the NIA is expected to bring its expertise in handling terrorism-related cases to unravel the full conspiracy.
Reacting to the case being handed over to the NIA, Manoranjan Kalia said, “It’s up to the state and Central agencies to decide how to proceed. The NIA often has access to broader intelligence on past attacks and handlers, which can help piece together the bigger picture.”
Meanwhile, Kalia’s security has been significantly enhanced. In addition to the four security personnel already assigned to him, Punjab Police have deployed 10 more gunmen. Central agencies have also recommended upgrading his security to Y-plus category, given the potential threat.
