Muktsar Police Intensify Anti-Drug Campaign, Over 300 Arrested in Three Months
As part of its ongoing anti-drug initiative ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ (War Against Drugs), the Muktsar district police have made significant progress, registering 193 cases and arresting 319 individuals under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in the first quarter of the year.
The figures mark a sharp increase compared to the whole of 2024, during which 348 cases were registered and 522 arrests were made.
Muktsar SSP Akhil Chaudhary attributed the rise to not only enhanced enforcement but also improved community cooperation and intelligence-sharing. “We are committed to breaking the backbone of the drug network and protecting our youth from addiction. No one involved in drug trafficking will be spared,” he said. He urged residents to report drug-related activity via the Safe Punjab Anti-Drug Helpline at 9779100200, assuring that all information would be kept strictly confidential.
By the end of March this year, the district police had seized approximately 1.5 kg of heroin, 3.7 quintals of poppy husk, over 31 kg of opium, 45 bottles of intoxicant syrups, 19,186 tablets and capsules, 3 kg of ganja, 8 kg of bhang, and drug-related cash amounting to ₹5.9 lakh. Additionally, properties worth ₹1.35 crore linked to 10 drug smugglers were frozen, and one property belonging to a peddler was demolished.
Based on disclosures from arrested individuals, 63 more suspects have been named in FIRs. The police, in coordination with the Drug Inspector, also carried out inspections at 155 chemist shops, resulting in action against three outlets for violations.
Under the SAMPARK programme, the police have conducted multiple public engagement drives, leading to 50 village panchayats adopting anti-drug resolutions. As a result of counselling efforts, 35 individuals battling addiction have been admitted to de-addiction centers.
SSP Chaudhary emphasized that the fight against drugs is a collective responsibility and reaffirmed the district police’s unwavering commitment to eradicating the menace.
