Record 22 Punjabis Elected to Canada's House of Commons in Recent Federal Polls

A record 22 Punjabis have secured seats in the House of Commons following Canada’s recent federal elections. This marks an increase from 18 Punjabi MPs elected in 2021 and 20 in 2019.

In Brampton, Punjabis captured five ridings:

  • Brampton North: Liberal candidate Ruby Sahota defeated Conservative Amandeep Judge.

  • Brampton East: Liberal Maninder Sidhu overcame Conservative Bob Dosanjh.

  • Brampton Centre: Liberal Amandeep Sohi won against Taran Chahal.

  • Brampton South: Conservative Sukhdeep Kang unseated Liberal Sonia Sidhu.

  • Brampton West: Conservative Amarjeet Gill defeated incumbent Health Minister Kamal Khera.

In a major political shift, NDP President and two-time MP Jagmeet Singh suffered a heavy defeat in Burnaby Central, finishing third. Following his loss, Singh resigned from his position as NDP president.

Another significant upset saw former Health Minister Kamal Khera lose her Brampton West seat to Conservative challenger Amarjeet Gill.
