Myles Garrett Becomes Highest-Paid Non-QB in NFL History with Browns Extension

Cleveland Browns superstar defensive end Myles Garrett is staying put after signing a historic contract extension. The Browns and the four-time All-Pro have agreed to a four-year extension through the 2030 season, the team announced on Sunday.

According to sources familiar with the deal, Garrett's extension is worth $40 million per year, with $123.5 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the financial details of the agreement.

Garrett, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Texas A&M, has been a dominant force on the defensive line for Cleveland. In his eight seasons, he has amassed 102.5 career sacks, the most in franchise history, and ranks second in the NFL in sacks since entering the league.

However, not everything had been smooth for Garrett before the extension. Despite his individual success, the Browns have only made the playoffs twice— in 2020 and 2023—during his tenure. Last season, Cleveland endured a tough 3-14 record, though Garrett remained a standout performer, recording 14 sacks (second most in the league) and an NFL-best 22 tackles for loss.

In February, the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year requested a trade, expressing his desire to compete for a Super Bowl title.

“As a kid dreaming of the NFL, all I focused on was the ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl – and that goal fuels me today more than ever,” Garrett wrote. “While I’ve loved calling this city my home, my desire to win and compete on the biggest stages won’t allow me to be complacent.

“The goal was never to go from Cleveland to Canton, it has always been to compete for and win a Super Bowl.”

Despite Garrett’s trade request, Browns general manager Andrew Berry remained firm, stating last month that the organization had no interest in moving their defensive star and expected him to remain with the team.

With their cornerstone pass rusher secured, Cleveland will now turn its attention to strengthening the roster ahead of the upcoming season. The Browns currently hold the No. 2 overall selection in April’s NFL Draft, presenting a prime opportunity to add impact talent to their squad.
