Punjab Schools to Set Up ‘Sugar Boards’ to Curb Children’s Sugar Intake

In a proactive move to combat rising health concerns among children, the Punjab School Education Department has instructed all schools across the state to install special “sugar boards” aimed at monitoring and reducing sugar consumption among students.

The initiative, inspired by recommendations from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), is part of a broader campaign to promote healthier lifestyles in schools.

In an official directive issued to all District Education Officers (DEOs), the department highlighted that excessive sugar intake is a major contributor to childhood obesity and diabetes. The newly introduced sugar boards will serve as awareness tools—informing students about the recommended daily sugar intake for various age groups and revealing the sugar content in popular food items.

The campaign also includes efforts to reduce the availability of junk food and sugary beverages on school campuses, while encouraging nutritious and balanced dietary alternatives.

Health experts have praised the move, calling it a much-needed step in the right direction. They believe the initiative will help instill healthy eating habits early in life and reduce long-term health risks among children.

The Education Department has directed DEOs to ensure strict implementation of the guidelines in all government and private schools.
