"Women like us must stand up for the vulnerable and the exploited," says Tisca Chopra.

Seventeen years later, Tisca Chopra still finds herself referring to *Taare Zameen Par* in conversations—not just because it was India’s official entry to the Academy Awards and earned her numerous accolades for her portrayal of Maya Awasthy, but because of the lasting lessons and the deep personal impact the film had on her.

During a recent interaction with students at Chitkara University, Tisca reflected on the film’s influence. She discussed a range of topics, including work-life balance, parenting, the integration of theatre in education, and mental health. However, what stood out most was how being part of a story about a dyslexic child heightened her sensitivity to the needs and desires of others.

This empathy has become a core part of her character, leading her to speak out on issues that matter. Recently, she condemned the Kolkata rape case in a powerful statement. "As the mother of a young girl, how do I feel when another woman is raped? An ‘independent,’ educated working woman at her place of work, after a 36-hour shift. A doctor," she wrote. She has also previously spoken about the exploitation of women in the film industry, receiving both praise and criticism for her bold stance.

In an informal conversation, Tisca elaborated on her activism, both online and offline. “To remain silent when such a heinous crime is committed against a woman would be a crime in itself. Women like us, who are educated and have a voice, must stand up for the vulnerable and the exploited. We often hesitate, thinking our single voice will be drowned out by trolls, but we must speak! If even a few people hear and amplify that voice, that’s enough. A small step in the right direction is what I aim for,” she said.

When asked if she harbored political ambitions, she was quick to clarify, “No, not at all. As the mother of a growing girl, I just want to help create a society where my daughter feels safe.”
