President’s Church Donation Sparks Clashes in Kenya

Protests Erupt Over Ruto’s Generous Contribution to Nairobi Church

Police in Kenya used tear gas to disperse protesters who attempted to occupy the Jesus Winner Ministry church in Nairobi’s Roysambu suburb after President William Ruto donated 20 million shillings ($155,000; £120,000) to the institution.

The donation has sparked outrage among young Kenyans struggling with the rising cost of living, with critics questioning the large financial gift while many citizens face economic hardship. Ruto, however, has defended his actions, stating that he is committed to supporting religious institutions and has pledged a similar contribution to another church in Eldoret.

Both the Catholic and Anglican Church leaders in Kenya previously rejected political donations, warning against using places of worship for political gain.

During the protests, at least 38 people were arrested but later released without charge. Demonstrators attempted to storm the church, light fires, and block roads with rocks, but security forces prevented further escalation. Despite the tensions, the church service proceeded under tight security. Bishop Edward Mwai claimed that unidentified individuals had incited “thugs” to disrupt the gathering, according to The Star news site.

Ruto, an evangelical Christian, insisted that his donation aimed to combat what he calls Kenya’s moral decay. "Kenya must know God so that we shame the people who are telling us that we cannot associate with the church," he stated at another service in Eldoret, as reported by The Nation.

Public frustration with Ruto’s administration has been mounting, particularly over tax hikes introduced since he took office in 2022. The president has defended the measures, arguing they are necessary to manage the country's debt. However, many Kenyans believe he should prioritize tackling government corruption and wasteful spending.

Last year, widespread protests forced Ruto to withdraw a controversial Finance Bill that proposed additional tax increases, demonstrating the growing discontent among citizens.
