More than 150,000 Canadians have signed a parliamentary petition demanding that Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship be revoked

More than 150,000 Canadians have signed a parliamentary petition demanding that Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship be revoked. Launched by British Columbia–based author Qualia Reed and sponsored by New Democrat MP Charlie Angus, the petition alleges that Musk’s close ties with former U.S. President Donald Trump have undermined Canada’s national interests.

Filed in the House of Commons on 20 February, the petition argues that by serving as an adviser to Trump—who has repeatedly threatened to annex Canada and impose steep tariffs on its exports—Musk has aligned himself with a foreign government intent on erasing Canadian sovereignty. Musk, born in South Africa and at the helm of Tesla, SpaceX, and Twitter/X, holds Canadian citizenship through his Regina-born mother.

The controversy deepened after Trump’s ongoing taunts toward Canada, including boasts about turning the nation into the U.S.’ 51st state, and his provocative comments during politically charged moments, such as the 20 February hockey tournament final. Musk, meanwhile, has not shied away from political theater. Earlier this month he celebrated Canadian political shakeups—praising clips of Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre and even relishing Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau’s resignation announcement on his social media platform.

Under Canadian parliamentary rules, a petition requires just 500 signatures to be officially considered. Reed’s campaign, which has already amassed around 167,000 signatures as of early Monday, far exceeds that threshold. The petition will remain open until 20 June, even as the House of Commons is set to resume work on 24 March—though a snap general election remains a possibility.

Adding to the political intrigue is Musk’s recent campaign to cut U.S. federal spending—a move that has affected thousands of civil servants across major departments like Veterans Affairs, Defense, Health and Human Services, the IRS, and the National Parks Service. An Economist/YouGov poll of nearly 1,600 respondents indicated that both Musk and his so-called “department of government efficiency” are far less popular than their proponents claim.

In a recent public appearance at a conservative gathering in Maryland, Musk was seen waving a giant chainsaw with apparent glee. On Sunday, he further stoked controversy on X by declaring, “Of course we support Doge! Those who don’t support it are unAmerican.”

This unfolding saga reflects growing tensions over national sovereignty and the impact of transnational political alliances amid an increasingly polarized political landscape.
