Iran launches ballistic missiles at Israel, warns of ‘crushing’ response to any retaliation
Iran Fires Missiles at Israel in Retaliation for Hezbollah and Hamas Leaders’ Deaths
On Tuesday, Iran launched a barrage of ballistic missiles at Israel, responding to Israeli strikes targeting Hezbollah forces in Lebanon and the recent deaths of key figures in Hezbollah and Hamas.
Sirens blared across Israel, with explosions reported in Jerusalem and the Jordan River Valley. Citizens rushed into bomb shelters, while live television coverage showed reporters taking cover.
In neighboring Jordan, Reuters journalists observed some missiles being intercepted. Israeli media outlets reported that up to 100 missiles were fired. The Israeli military later confirmed the interception of many missiles and declared the threat over after an hour.
Reports suggest the attack involved between 150 and 200 missiles, marking Iran’s second strike on Israel this year, following a missile and drone assault in April, which came after an Israeli air raid on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.
Israel vowed retaliation, with military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari warning, “This attack will have consequences. We will respond at a time and place of our choosing.”
Emergency services reported minimal injuries, with two individuals lightly wounded by shrapnel in Tel Aviv, and several others sustaining minor injuries while seeking shelter.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility, citing the deaths of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh as the cause for their attack. In a statement via the Fars news agency, the Guards threatened further action if Israel retaliated.
“If the Zionist regime reacts to Iranian operations, it will face crushing attacks,” the Guards warned.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei reportedly authorized the missile strike, with Iranian officials expressing readiness for any countermeasures from Israel. Tehran’s mission to the UN defended the attack as a “legal and rational response to terrorist actions,” and warned that any Israeli retaliation would lead to further escalations.
Iran also urged regional countries and Israel's allies to distance themselves from the “Zionist regime” to avoid being drawn into the conflict.
