After Paris, PM Modi Heads to Marseille: Why the French City Matters to India
PM Modi and President Macron to Inaugurate India’s New Consulate in Marseille
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently in France, co-chairing the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit with French President Emmanuel Macron. On Monday, February 10, he commenced his three-day visit to the European nation, which includes high-level bilateral discussions between the two leaders.
On Wednesday, February 12, PM Modi and President Macron will travel to the southern French city of Marseille to inaugurate an Indian consulate. This will be India’s second diplomatic mission in France, following the embassy in Paris. The leaders will also visit the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) facilities near Marseille. ITER, a collaborative fusion technology initiative involving both India and France, aims to develop sustainable energy solutions for global benefit.
Why Marseille for India’s Second Consulate in France?
During his 2023 visit to France, marking the 25th anniversary of the Indo-French strategic partnership, PM Modi announced India's plan to open a consulate in Marseille. The decision underscores the city’s significance as a vital hub for trade and people-to-people exchanges between India and France.
“In order to enhance people-to-people ties between India and France and particularly serve consular requirements and strengthen commercial relations in the South of France, India will open its Consulate General in Marseille,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had stated at the time.
The new consulate will serve the growing Indian diaspora in southern France, including Marseille, Toulouse, and the Rhone-Alpes region. It will provide essential consular services, reducing the need for travel to Paris for documentation and administrative work. Additionally, the consulate is expected to assist Indian businesses in establishing and expanding their presence in France.
By selecting Marseille for its second diplomatic mission in France, India aims to bolster economic and cultural ties while facilitating smoother diplomatic engagement in the region.
