Six Farmers Injured in Police Action Over Land Acquisition Dispute
Batala: Six farmers were injured on Tuesday following a police cane charge during a confrontation over land acquisition for the Delhi-Jammu-Katra Expressway.
A district administration team, led by Batala SDM Vikramjit Singh Panthey, arrived at Nangal Chor village near Sri-Hargobindpur early in the morning to take possession of the land. While officials from the administration and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) claimed that farmers had received proper compensation, farm unions strongly disputed the assertion.
As officials moved forward with the acquisition, around 50 farmers gathered at the site, refusing to grant access. They demanded that compensation be paid in full before surrendering their land. The situation escalated into a confrontation, prompting the police to resort to a cane charge, injuring six farmers.
All the injured were admitted to Harchowal Civil Hospital for treatment. However, SSP Suhail Qasim Mir stated that the injuries were minor.
A farm leader alleged that during previous meetings, the administration had assured them of adequate compensation before acquiring their land. “However, they have now backtracked on their promise. We will consult our senior leaders before deciding on our next course of action,” he said.
Tensions remain high as farmers continue to demand fair compensation before relinquishing their land.
