Seven Amritpal Singh Aides Re-Arrested, Remanded in Police Custody Until March 25
Seven associates of radical preacher and Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh were presented before a court in Ajnala, Amritsar, on Friday and remanded to police custody till March 25. The move comes after their release from Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam, where they had been detained under the National Security Act (NSA) for nearly two years.
Although the Punjab government chose not to renew their NSA detention, the Punjab Police re-arrested the seven in connection with the 2023 Ajnala police station attack and obtained a transit remand from a local Dibrugarh court to bring them back to Punjab. All seven were brought to court under tight security arrangements.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav confirmed that the individuals will now face legal proceedings in the Ajnala case, where they are accused of involvement in a violent attack on a police station near Amritsar on February 23, 2023. During that incident, Amritpal Singh and his armed supporters allegedly stormed the station, clashed with police personnel, and demanded the release of one of his aides. The group has been charged with attempt to murder, promoting enmity among communities, assaulting police officers, and obstructing public servants in the discharge of their duties.
A 25-member Punjab Police team had been stationed in Dibrugarh to oversee the legal and logistical process of the transfer. The seven individuals brought back to Punjab are:
- Basant Singh from Daulatpura Ucha, Moga
- Bhagwant Singh alias Pradhan Mantri Bajeke from village Bajeke, Moga
- Gurmeet Singh Gill alias Gurmeet Bukkanwala from village Bukkanwala, Moga
- Sarabjeet Singh Kalsi alias Daljeet Singh Kalsi from West Punjabi Bagh, New Delhi
- Gurinderpal Singh Aujla alias Guri Aujla from Phagwara
- Harjeet Singh alias Chacha from village Jallupur Khera, Amritsar
- Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal alias Kulwant Singh from Rauke Kalan, Moga
All had been held in Dibrugarh Central Jail along with Amritpal Singh and two other associates under NSA provisions since 2023.
Amritpal Singh, known for his pro-Khalistan stance and styling himself after slain militant leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, was arrested on April 23, 2023, from Rode village in Moga after evading authorities for over a month. He had escaped a police operation in Jalandhar on March 18, 2023, by switching vehicles and changing disguises.
Despite his arrest, Amritpal Singh made headlines again in 2024 after winning the Khadoor Sahib seat in the Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate. He remains in custody at Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam.
