Punjab Resident Acquitted in Three-Year-Old Rape Case
Manjot Bawa, alias Shagun, a 22-year-old youth from Punjab, was acquitted by the Fast Track Court Special Judge in Chandigarh in a three-year-old rape case after the prosecution failed to prove the charges against him.
The case, registered on August 3, 2021, included charges under Sections 376, 354, 506, 384, and 34 of the IPC. The complainant alleged that she met the accused on Instagram, and they entered a relationship. She claimed he made false promises of marriage, demanded photos and videos, and later blackmailed her using those materials. She also accused him of demanding money, attempting to rape her at her home with his friends, and assaulting her mother and brother. Additionally, the accused allegedly created a fake Instagram account and shared her private photos and videos publicly.
Though the accused was arrested and charges were framed, the complainant did not support the prosecution's case. With no other substantial evidence, the court acquitted Manjot Bawa. While the public prosecutor argued that the case was proven, defence counsel SS Rana maintained that the accused was falsely implicated.
