Punjab Police Releases 450 More Farmers, Vows to Trace Missing Belongings Amid Detention Row
Facing mounting pressure from farmer unions over the alleged disappearance of detained protesters, the Punjab Police on Monday announced the release of an additional 450 farmers. The announcement comes amid allegations that several farmers taken into custody last week remain unaccounted for.
Farmer unions had earlier approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court with a Habeas Corpus petition, seeking the release and whereabouts of missing individuals. The High Court is set to hear the matter on Monday.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Headquarters, Dr. Sukhchain Singh Gill, stated that nearly 800 farmers have already been released from custody. He added that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had issued clear instructions to prioritize the release of vulnerable detainees, including women, senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, and those with medical conditions. “In line with the Punjab Government’s directions, we are ensuring the prompt release of such individuals. About 450 more farmers are being released today,” Gill confirmed.
Addressing concerns about missing belongings of detained farmers, Gill reassured that the state has issued strict guidelines to prevent any misuse or loss of their property. In Patiala, SP Jasbir Singh has been appointed as the Nodal Officer to assist farmers. Those experiencing issues can contact him directly at 90713-00002 for immediate support.
The IGP further noted that Patiala Police have already registered three FIRs in connection with complaints related to the matter, underscoring the administration’s commitment to addressing the grievances of the protesting farmers.
