Punjab Vidhan Sabha Unanimously Rejects Centre’s Draft Agriculture Policy, CM Bhagwant Mann Leads Opposition

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann spearheaded the opposition against the Centre’s alleged anti-farmer policies on Tuesday during a discussion in the Vidhan Sabha. The debate focused on a resolution introduced by the state’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government to reject the Draft National Policy on Agricultural Marketing.

The resolution was unanimously passed, with MLAs from all parties coming together to reject the policy.

During the two-hour discussion, MLAs from both the Treasury and Opposition benches criticized the Centre for interfering in agriculture marketing, a subject under state jurisdiction. They condemned the move as unconstitutional and an encroachment on state rights.

Legislators further asserted that the draft policy primarily aims to promote private markets while significantly weakening the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) system, ultimately making it obsolete.

Notably, BJP MLAs Ashwani Sharma and Jangi Lal Mahajan were absent from the discussion.
