Punjab Government Warns Striking Revenue Officers: Return to Work or Face Suspension
The Punjab government has issued a stern warning to revenue officers currently on strike, directing them to resume their duties immediately or face suspension. The directive was issued by the Additional Chief Secretary of Revenue, following an earlier warning from Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who strongly condemned the strike by tehsildars, accusing them of supporting corrupt colleagues.
Reaffirming his administration’s zero-tolerance policy on corruption, Mann stated, “To ensure the public does not face inconvenience, alternative tehsil officers have been assigned duties to keep operations running smoothly. Enjoy your collective holiday, tehsildars. But remember, the people will decide when and how you return to work after this break.”
To assess the situation firsthand, Mann visited tehsil offices in Kharar and Fatehgarh Sahib, ensuring that public services were not disrupted. Earlier, acting on his instructions, kanungos and PCS officers were assigned to take over the responsibilities of the striking tehsildars.
The official warning letter criticized the ongoing protest, describing the refusal to register documents as an act of "blackmailing and arm twisting" that the government would not tolerate. It instructed all revenue officers to return to their duties by 5 PM on Wednesday or face strict consequences. Those failing to comply would be suspended, with their absence considered dies non—a break in service.
Further, the government warned that disciplinary action would be taken under the Punjab Civil Services (Punishment & Appeal) Rules, 1970. Probationary officers participating in the strike were also cautioned that their services could be terminated for misconduct or dereliction of duty.
