HC Calls for Affidavits on Textbook Shortage in Punjab and Chandigarh
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has instructed the state of Punjab and the Union Territory of Chandigarh to submit affidavits addressing the issue of non-supply of textbooks up to Class 8.
Hearing a public interest petition, a Bench comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Anil Kshetarpal emphasized that failure to file the affidavits would require the concerned authorities to appear virtually.
“Affidavits must be filed by the State of Punjab and the Union Territory of Chandigarh by the next hearing. If not, the Principal Secretary, Department of School Education, Punjab, and the Director of School Education, Chandigarh, will need to appear personally via virtual platform,” the Bench stated.
The petition claims that, despite the government's assurance of free education and resources up to Class 7 across India, textbooks have not been distributed to Class 6 students.
