Farmer Leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal Ends 123-Day Fast, Supreme Court Informed

Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal has ended his 123-day hunger strike, Punjab Advocate General Gurminder Singh informed the Supreme Court on Friday. Dallewal, who had been on a fast-unto-death since November 26, 2024, accepted water, marking the end of his protest.

Bringing the development to the notice of a Bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice N. Kotiswar Singh, the Advocate General said, “With your Lordships’ intervention, Mr. Dallewal has accepted water today and broken his fast.”

Welcoming the news, Justice Kant responded, “Very good, very good … Pray for his good health. We have said in open court, without mincing words, that he is a genuine farmer leader with no political agenda. He raises legitimate concerns on behalf of the farming community. There are some who would never want a resolution, but he is not among them.”

Dallewal had been fasting to press for key farmer demands, including the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, pension for farmers and agricultural workers, a complete farm debt waiver, restoration of the Land Acquisition Act, 2013, and compensation for the families of farmers who died during the 2020–21 protests.

In January 2025, he had agreed to receive medical care without ending his fast and had also expressed willingness to engage in dialogue with the central government.

The Supreme Court Bench also welcomed the reopening of the highways at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points, which had been blocked due to ongoing protests. “Lakhs of people will benefit,” Justice Kant noted.
