Drone Sightings Near NIT Jalandhar Spark Panic; Exams Postponed, Hostellers Allowed to Leave

Following drone activity allegedly originating from across the border near the Dr BR Ambedkar National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Jalandhar, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has directed institute authorities to allow hostel residents to temporarily vacate the campus.

The decision came after students recorded videos of drones flying overhead and being intercepted, reportedly from their hostel balconies, and shared the footage with their families. Alarmed by the visuals, many parents began calling the institute urgently, requesting the release of their children for safety reasons.

In response, the institute has postponed all examinations that were scheduled to begin on May 14. Students have been granted leave from campus until May 16.

To facilitate safe transit, the MHRD instructed campus officials to arrange special bus services to transport students to the local bus stand and railway station, enabling them to return to their hometowns. A professor confirmed that these shuttle services began at 6 a.m. and would continue throughout the day, aligned with students’ travel bookings.

The NIT Jalandhar campus hosts approximately 6,000 students, including those enrolled in B.Tech, M.Tech, and doctoral programs.

The incident adds to the growing tension in Punjab and northern India, where several cities remain on high alert amid ongoing security threats and cross-border hostilities.
