Court Grants Bail to Narain Singh Chaura in Attempted Attack on Sukhbir Badal
A local court on Tuesday granted bail to Narain Singh Chaura, who was accused of attempting to assassinate former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister and senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal. The 70-year-old has been directed to furnish a bail bond of ₹1 lakh.
Chaura is expected to be released from Ropar Central Jail on Wednesday, pending the completion of formalities. “We will submit the bail bond in the local court tomorrow,” said his son, Baljinder Singh Bajwa.
The alleged incident occurred on December 4, when Badal was performing religious service as a sewadar at the entrance of the Golden Temple. This act was part of a religious punishment assigned by the Akal Takht — the highest temporal authority of the Sikhs — which had held Badal and several other Akali leaders accountable for “mistakes” made during the SAD's tenure from 2007 to 2017.
Chaura’s lawyer, Jaspal Singh Manjhpur, confirmed the court’s decision and noted that the police had opposed the bail, citing Chaura’s history of 28 previous cases. However, the defence argued that Chaura had already been acquitted in all of those cases.
The case has drawn attention due to Chaura’s controversial past and the high-profile nature of the alleged target.
