AAP Defends Withdrawal of Z-Plus Security for Majithia, Questions Opposition's Support
Reacting to the united Opposition’s criticism over the withdrawal of Z-plus security cover for Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab President Aman Arora on Wednesday questioned their support for a leader facing drug smuggling charges.
The Punjab government withdrew Majithia’s Z-plus security on Tuesday, prompting strong reactions from senior leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal, Congress, and BJP, who condemned the move. Majithia himself alleged that the decision was a form of political vendetta, citing his continued criticism of the AAP government.
In response, Arora released a video message challenging the Opposition’s unified stand. “Why are all these parties suddenly sympathetic to someone accused of drug smuggling?” he asked. “AAP has long maintained that leaders across party lines have provided tacit support to Punjab’s drug trade. Now, the same parties – Congress, Akali Dal, and BJP – are joining forces to defend him.”
He further criticized the Opposition for prioritizing the security of a controversial leader over public welfare. “These parties never united for the rights of Punjabi people, but they are quick to rally behind someone facing serious allegations,” Arora said.
Highlighting the ongoing state-wide anti-drug campaign, Arora questioned the justification of providing Prime Minister-level security to an individual accused in drug cases. “When the state is fighting to end drug addiction, was it appropriate for such a person to receive Z-plus security?” he asked.
Arora reaffirmed the AAP government's commitment to combating the drug menace, emphasizing that no individual—regardless of political affiliation—would be shielded. “The fight against drugs in Punjab is non-negotiable. No one will be spared,” he stated.
