On March 23, 2025, the city of Los Angeles witnessed a historic turnout as more than 35,000 members of the Sikh Sangat participated in the ongoing global Khalistan Referendum campaign. Organized as part of the Sikh community's democratic push for the creation of an independent Sikh homeland, the event reflected the growing unity and resolve of Sikhs across the world.
For many in the community, the referendum is not just a political statement—it is a spiritual and historical duty to honor the legacy of the countless Shaheeds (martyrs) who laid down their lives for Sikh sovereignty and justice. The date of the referendum, held on the anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s martyrdom, added deep emotional and symbolic significance for participants.
Preparations are now underway for the next phase of voting, scheduled to be held in Washington, D.C. on August 17, 2025. Sikh activists and leaders have hailed the Los Angeles referendum as a major milestone in the Panthic (community's) journey toward reclaiming self-determination and justice.
The Khalistan movement has gained renewed momentum in recent years, especially following the targeted killing of Bhai Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent Sikh leader and Canadian citizen. Investigative reports have indicated possible involvement of Indian intelligence agency RAW in his assassination—raising serious global concerns about the safety of Sikh leaders abroad and India's conduct on the international stage.
These ongoing incidents have not only fueled international scrutiny of India’s policies but have also united Sikhs across the diaspora in their shared vision of a free and sovereign Khalistan. Community members see the referendum as a peaceful, democratic assertion of their birthright—guided by the principles of Sarbat da Bhala (well-being of all) and justice for the oppressed.
Amid rising global concerns about the treatment of religious minorities in India, including Sikhs and Muslims, this referendum is seen as a powerful declaration: the Sikh nation will not be silenced. Wherever they reside, Sikhs remain firm in their commitment to Guru Sahib’s path of righteousness, sovereignty, and self-respect.
The Los Angeles referendum marks yet another chapter in the Sangat’s ongoing struggle for freedom—carried forward with determination, unity, and the blessings of the Guru.
