Jaishankar Emphasizes Compliance with UN Convention in Indo-Pacific Region
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday underscored the importance of upholding the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), 1982, in the Indo-Pacific region, emphasizing that international agreements must be honored without coercion.
Speaking at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, Jaishankar highlighted the significance of abiding by international law, particularly UNCLOS. "In the Indo-Pacific, it is essential that international law—especially UNCLOS—is respected. Agreements must be honored, and there should be no space for coercion,” he stated.
His remarks come amid increasing tensions in the region, particularly regarding China's assertive stance in the South China Sea. China’s claim over the Nine-Dash Line, encompassing a vast expanse of the South China Sea, has been widely contested and seen as inconsistent with UNCLOS provisions. The convention, adopted in 1982, is considered the foundational legal framework governing maritime rights and responsibilities.
Addressing Middle East Concerns
On the Middle East situation, Jaishankar welcomed the ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages. He reiterated India’s stance on supporting humanitarian aid, condemning terrorism, and advocating for a two-state solution.
He also emphasized India’s role in ensuring maritime security in and around the Middle East, which is crucial for global trade. "Indian naval forces have been actively contributing to maintaining security in the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden," he noted.
Regarding Lebanon and Syria, Jaishankar stressed the importance of maintaining the ceasefire and pursuing an inclusive, Syrian-led resolution to the ongoing crisis. "Peace and stability in the region are vital for global security," he asserted.
The G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting brought together leaders from various nations, including China’s Wang Yi, to discuss pressing global geopolitical issues.
