Israeli Tourist and Homestay Host Gang-Raped in India, Police Say

Two women were sexually assaulted, and a man was killed in a brutal attack near a UNESCO World Heritage site in Karnataka, according to authorities.

An Israeli tourist and an Indian homestay operator were gang-raped while stargazing near a lake in Hampi, Karnataka, with three male tourists when they were ambushed by a group of men on Thursday night, police confirmed.

Koppal district police superintendent Ram Arasiddi told Reuters that the assailants overpowered the group, forcing the three male tourists into the Tungabhadra River canal before attacking the women.

Two of the men, including an American, survived the ordeal, but the third victim’s body was recovered on Saturday morning.

"Five individuals—two women and three men—were targeted in the attack near Sanapur," Arasiddi stated. "Among them, two are foreigners: an American man and an Israeli woman."

Authorities have arrested two suspects and launched an investigation, suspecting that the perpetrators had been following the group.

The U.S. State Department acknowledged reports that an American citizen was among the victims of the violent crime near Hampi.

Attack Unfolded Over a Demand for Money

According to witness accounts, the group had been stargazing near a temple in Sanapur when three men arrived on a motorcycle, asking where they could buy petrol.

While one of the tourists attempted to give directions, one of the men allegedly demanded 100 rupees (approximately $1.29).

When the homestay operator refused, stating she did not know them, one of the male tourists handed over 20 rupees. The demand quickly escalated into an argument before the attack began, police said.

The body of one of the male tourists was later discovered in the Tungabhadra canal in Karnataka’s Koppal district.

Authorities have registered a case at Gangavathi Rural Police Station under multiple sections, including extortion, robbery, gang rape, and attempted murder.

The victims are receiving medical treatment at a government hospital.

Government Response and Ongoing Concerns

Hampi, an ancient village in Karnataka, is known for its historical ruins and temples from the Vijayanagara Empire. The UNESCO World Heritage site attracts tourists from around the world.

Reacting to the incident, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah condemned the attack.

"The rape of an Israeli citizen and a homestay operator is a heinous act," he wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter). "I have ordered a thorough investigation and directed police to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice. Two suspects have been arrested, and the investigation continues."

Crimes against women in India have sparked national and international outrage in recent years. In 2023, the rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata led to widespread protests over women's safety.

This latest case has once again drawn attention to the ongoing concerns over violent crimes in the country.
