Amit Shah: Every Northeast Capital to Be Connected by Rail, Road, and Air Within Two Years

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Tuesday that all state capitals in Northeast India would be linked by rail, road, and air within the next two years.

Speaking at the Northeast Students’ and Youth Parliament, organized by ABVP, Shah emphasized the BJP government’s efforts to bridge the gap between the Northeast and the rest of India. “By 2027, every capital in the Northeast will have train, plane, and road connectivity,” he stated.

Shah highlighted the significant decline in violence in the region under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. “Between 2004 and 2014, there were 11,000 violent incidents in the Northeast. Over the last decade, from 2014 to 2024, this number has dropped by 70% to 3,428,” he said. Security force fatalities have also decreased by 70%, while civilian deaths have seen an 89% decline.

The Home Minister noted that the government has signed 12 crucial peace agreements over the past decade, leading to over 10,500 insurgents laying down arms and reintegrating into mainstream society.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to the region, Shah pointed out that PM Modi has prioritized the Northeast. “Since independence, the total number of visits by all Prime Ministers to the Northeast, excluding Assam, stands at 21. In contrast, Modi alone has visited the region 78 times, reflecting the importance given to the Northeast,” he said.

He further revealed that a ₹2,700 crore semiconductor plant is being set up in Assam, along with a massive ₹2.5 lakh crore investment in the region.

Assuring the youth of better opportunities, Shah stated, “In the next 10 years, no child or youth from the Northeast will need to leave for work elsewhere, as employment opportunities will be created within the region itself.”
