PSHRC Takes Suo Motu Notice of Poor Water Quality in Muktsar, Seeks Report from Health Dept

The Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a Tribune news report titled “65% water samples fail potability test in Muktsar”, and has directed the Secretary of the Punjab Health Department to submit a detailed report by the next hearing scheduled for May 26.

In its order, the commission noted that it had reviewed the viral news clipping circulating on social media, which highlighted a serious water quality crisis in the Muktsar district. The report revealed that out of 51 water samples collected from different areas, only 18 were deemed safe for human consumption. The remaining 33 samples failed the potability test due to bacterial contamination or other hazardous impurities.

The water quality tests were conducted by the Punjab State Public Health Laboratory in Kharar, raising concerns about the availability of clean and safe drinking water in the region.

The PSHRC’s intervention underscores the urgency of the issue and the need for immediate remedial action to ensure public health and safety.
