Trump Shifts Tone on Zelenskyy While Reaffirming Greenland Ambitions
In today’s update: Trump commends Ukraine’s leader for supporting peace talks and reiterates U.S. intentions to acquire Greenland
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has acknowledged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s willingness to negotiate for peace while doubling down on his aspirations to bring Greenland under U.S. control.
During a speech to Congress following a contentious White House meeting last week, Trump revealed he had received a letter from Zelenskyy signaling Ukraine’s readiness to engage in peace talks.
Quoting from the letter, Trump said Zelenskyy expressed Ukraine’s commitment to "coming to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer" and emphasized that "nobody wants peace more than the Ukrainians." He further noted that Zelenskyy appreciated America’s efforts to uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence.
Trump also claimed to have been engaged in "serious discussions with Russia" and suggested he had received "strong signals that they are ready for peace."
"Wouldn’t that be beautiful?" he remarked. "It’s time to stop this madness. It’s time to halt the killing. It’s time to end this senseless war. If you want to end wars, you have to talk to both sides."
His remarks marked a notable shift in rhetoric after previously freezing U.S. military aid to Ukraine following his clash with Zelenskyy in the Oval Office. However, he stopped short of outlining specific plans for resolving the conflict.
In the same speech, Trump reiterated his determination to bring Greenland under U.S. control, stating, "We’re going to get it – one way or another." He emphasized Greenland’s strategic importance for national and international security and assured its people that the U.S. would welcome them should they choose to join.
"We strongly support your right to determine your own future," he said, as Vice President JD Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson looked on approvingly. "And if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America. We will keep you safe. We will make you rich."
Trump also reaffirmed his stance on the Panama Canal, celebrating a recent sale of two Chinese-operated ports near the canal to U.S.-owned BlackRock. He argued that the canal had always been an American project, stating, "We didn’t give it to China; we gave it to Panama, and we’re taking it back."
Additionally, he pointed to his secretary of state, Marco Rubio, who had recently visited Panama to address regional concerns over migration and infrastructure control. With a touch of humor, Trump quipped, "We have Marco Rubio in charge. Good luck, Marco. Now we know who to blame if anything goes wrong."
Trump also defended recent trade policies, including tariffs imposed on Mexico and Canada, despite criticism from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who had labeled the move "a very dumb thing to do."
As Trump continues to shape his foreign policy stance, his softened approach to Ukraine and persistent territorial ambitions signal ongoing shifts in global strategy.
