Trial Date Set for Man Accused in Derby Bank Stabbing

Suspect charged with murder of Gurvinder Johal to face trial in January 2026 following fatal attack at Lloyds bank.

A man accused of fatally stabbing another man inside a city centre bank is set to face trial early next year.

Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur, 47, of Western Road, Derby, has been charged with the murder of 37-year-old Gurvinder Johal, who was attacked inside Lloyds Bank on St Peter's Street just after 14:30 BST on Tuesday.

Mr Nur appeared at Derby Crown Court on Friday via video link from HMP Nottingham. With the assistance of a Somali interpreter, he was informed by Judge Shaun Smith KC that a provisional trial date has been scheduled for 19 January 2026.

No bail application was made during the hearing. Judge Smith ordered that Mr Nur remain in custody until the trial. The custody time limit, originally set to expire in November, has been extended to the end of January 2026 to allow for the necessary reports to be prepared.

The trial is expected to last between two and three weeks.

Mr Nur is due to appear at Derby Crown Court again on 15 August.

Derbyshire Police confirmed that a second man in his 30s, who was arrested in connection with the incident, was released on Thursday with no further action taken.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) also received a referral from the force regarding the case, but later ruled it did not meet the criteria for a valid referral.
