Wheat Lifting Delay in Muktsar Raises Concerns as Procurement Season Nears End
As the wheat procurement season draws to a close, nearly 25% of the procured wheat in Muktsar district remains unlifted, causing growing concern among farmers and arhtiyas (commission agents).
Procurement and Lifting Figures
According to data from the district administration, a total of 8,94,849 metric tonnes (MT) of wheat had arrived in grain markets by Monday evening. Of this, 8,91,772 MT had been purchased by government agencies and private buyers. However, only 6,71,620 MT has been lifted from the mandis so far, leaving a backlog of 2,20,152 MT awaiting transportation.
Weather Woes Compounding the Issue
With daily wheat arrivals now declining—just 5,469 MT was recorded on Monday—the backlog is becoming more prominent. Recent dust storms and unseasonal rains have further aggravated concerns, with some already procured wheat stocks reportedly dampened due to moisture.
Stakeholder Reactions
One commission agent remarked, “The lifting pace is normal now, but the remaining wheat must be cleared quickly. The weather is highly unpredictable.”
A senior district official acknowledged the issue, stating, “We are actively coordinating with procurement agencies and transporters to expedite lifting operations. The slowdown in fresh arrivals will help us address the backlog more effectively.”
Looking Ahead
With the monsoon season approaching, swift lifting and storage of wheat are critical to prevent spoilage and financial losses. Farmers and market stakeholders continue to urge authorities to prioritize clearing the pending stock to safeguard their produce and ensure smooth closure of the procurement season.
