Teen Dies in Crash After Police Use Tyre Spikes to End 100km Pursuit of Allegedly Stolen Car in NSW
A high-speed police chase spanning 100 kilometers ended in tragedy when a car crashed and rolled in Bourke, New South Wales, leaving one teenager dead and three others injured. The pursuit, which lasted approximately 45 minutes, is now under independent review.
The vehicle, allegedly stolen, was being pursued by police when officers deployed road spikes to bring it to a stop. Despite the intervention, the car continued traveling through Bourke before crashing at around 1:30 am on Friday. A 17-year-old died at the scene, while three other boys, including a 14-year-old in serious condition, were taken to the hospital. The youngest of the injured was later airlifted to Sydney for urgent medical care.
NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley described the incident as a devastating loss for the small community. “These sorts of tragedies send shockwaves through towns like Bourke, affecting everyone,” she said.
The pursuit began following reports of a robbery at a service station in Narromine, in central NSW, more than two hours before the crash. Four teenagers allegedly stole a vehicle and fled the scene, prompting police to initiate a chase near Nyngan. The pursuit was briefly abandoned but resumed near Coolabah at around 12:45 am. Officers deployed tyre spikes at Coolabah and again near Bourke, but the car continued until it ultimately lost control and rolled over.
NSW Attorney General Michael Daley extended his sympathies to the family and friends of the teenager who lost his life, calling the event "horrendous."
Meanwhile, the tragic outcome of the crash has fueled debate about youth crime, with the state opposition questioning the government over concerns about juvenile delinquency and public safety. The police investigation remains ongoing and will undergo independent scrutiny.
