Sudan Military Plane Crashes in Residential Area, Killing 46
At least 46 people have lost their lives, and 10 others have been injured after a Sudanese military aircraft crashed into a residential neighborhood in Omdurman, the twin city of the capital, Khartoum, according to state media.
The Antonov aircraft went down shortly after taking off from the Wadi Seidna military air base on Tuesday evening. Among the victims were both military personnel and civilians. The exact cause of the crash remains unclear, though military sources suggest it was likely due to a technical malfunction.
This incident comes just a day after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), currently at war with Sudan’s military, claimed to have shot down a fighter jet in South Darfur. The ongoing conflict has left vast parts of Sudan, including Khartoum and Omdurman, in ruins, with thousands killed and nearly 12 million people displaced.
Following the crash, Sudan’s health ministry confirmed that emergency teams transported injured civilians, including children, to a nearby hospital for treatment. Reuters, citing unnamed military sources, reported that a senior army commander in Khartoum was among those killed.
Witnesses described hearing a loud explosion and seeing several homes damaged as the aircraft crashed. According to AFP, the impact also led to power outages in nearby areas.
Sudan has been engulfed in civil war since April 2023, when tensions between the army and the RSF escalated into a brutal power struggle. The conflict has effectively divided the country, with the army controlling the north and east, while the RSF holds most of Darfur in the west and parts of the south.
In recent weeks, the army has managed to reclaim certain areas of Khartoum and its surroundings from RSF control.
