Punjab and Haryana HCBA Braces for Intense Election on February 28

The Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association (HCBA) is gearing up for a highly contested election on February 28, where seven candidates will compete for the prestigious president’s post.

The election has drawn significant attention, with key campaign promises centered on financial aid, infrastructure development, and increased representation for women in the legal fraternity. Approximately 5,030 advocates are expected to vote for various office-bearer positions, including the president.

Candidates and Their Key Agendas

The seven contenders for the HCBA presidency are Vikas Malik, Sartej Singh Narula, Anil Pal Singh Shergill, Ravinder Singh Randhawa, Chouhan Satvinder Singh Sisodia, Nirbhay Garg, and Dr. Kanu Sharma. Each candidate has presented a distinct vision, promising meaningful reforms:

  • Sartej Singh Narula emphasizes inclusivity, improved infrastructure, and stronger coordination between Bar members and the judiciary, aiming to enhance HCBA’s reputation and welfare.
  • Ravinder Singh Randhawa focuses on financial assistance for underprivileged lawyers and pledges to secure Rs 15-20 lakh in Bar welfare funds.
  • Anil Pal Singh Shergill advocates for transparency and inclusivity, proposing a 50% reservation for women in senior advocate roles and a structured mentorship program for young lawyers.
  • Dr. Kanu Sharma champions zero tolerance for corruption, pledging enhanced safety measures for women lawyers, subsidized meals, and improved working conditions.
  • Chouhan Satvinder Singh Sisodia aims to streamline HCBA operations, reduce unnecessary expenditures, and establish a financial aid fund ranging from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore for families of deceased lawyers.
  • Vikas Malik, a former HCBA president, prioritizes financial relief by abolishing subscription fees for non-practicing lawyers and creating a dedicated Bar room for women advocates.
  • Nirbhay Garg supports comprehensive welfare initiatives, including subsidized meals, better medical insurance, and improved parking facilities for lawyers.

Tight Race for Other Key Positions

Beyond the presidential contest, elections for other crucial positions such as vice president, secretary, and joint secretary are also witnessing intense competition. Candidates are actively campaigning, as the outcome is expected to shape the HCBA’s policies and welfare programs in the coming years.

Polling will take place on February 28, with results anticipated soon after, determining the future leadership and direction of the association.
