Punjab Government Intensifies Efforts to Curb Drug Abuse

The Punjab government is stepping up its efforts to formulate an effective policy for preventing drug abuse and rehabilitating victims.

In a high-level meeting on Friday, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met with all Deputy Commissioners and Senior Superintendents of Police to devise a multi-pronged strategy to combat drug addiction. Officials have been directed to work in close coordination, with Deputy Commissioners, Police Commissioners, and SSPs playing key roles in the initiative.

As part of this strategy, law enforcement agencies will identify drug hotspots, disrupt the supply chain, and take strict action against traffickers. Additionally, properties owned by drug peddlers will be seized and demolished to deter illegal activities. CM Mann also urged Deputy Commissioners to turn the fight against drug addiction into a mass movement, encouraging active public participation.

The Chief Minister is expected to engage district officers in discussions regarding the implementation of a comprehensive drug prevention and rehabilitation policy to eliminate this menace from the state. This meeting comes a day after the government announced a five-member Cabinet subcommittee dedicated to tackling the growing drug problem.

Led by Finance Minister Harpal Cheema, the committee will oversee police and health department efforts in combating drug abuse. Other members include Ministers Aman Arora, Dr. Balbir Singh, Laljit Singh Bhullar, and Taranpreet Singh Sond.

The government's renewed focus on drug control follows public backlash during last year’s Lok Sabha elections, particularly from women who criticized its inability to curb the crisis. Officials from the Jails, Sports, Employment & Skill Development, Health, and Home Affairs departments, along with senior police officers led by the DGP, were also present at the meeting, reflecting a unified approach to addressing the issue.
