Punjab Government Forms Cabinet Committee to Tackle Drug Menace
In a decisive move to combat the growing drug crisis in Punjab, the state government on Thursday established a five-member Cabinet committee to oversee efforts in curbing drug addiction.
The committee will be responsible for monitoring and coordinating the actions of the police and health departments to strengthen de-addiction and enforcement measures.
Committee Composition
The committee will be chaired by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and includes:
- Aman Arora – Minister for New and Renewable Energy
- Balbir Singh – Health Minister
- Laljit Singh Bhullar – Transport Minister
- Taranpreet Sondh – Industries Minister
This initiative follows the earlier formation of a State Steering Committee by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, led by Chief Secretary KAP Sinha with Principal Secretary Rahul Tiwari as the nodal officer. The steering committee was tasked with overseeing Punjab’s de-addiction and rehabilitation programs.
The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has faced criticism over the increasing availability of drugs in the state, an issue that became a major concern during last year’s Lok Sabha elections. The new committee aims to strengthen enforcement, rehabilitation, and awareness efforts to curb the crisis.
