Kangra Police Arrest Two Women Smugglers Attempting to Flee to Canada
In a major crackdown on drug smuggling, Kangra police arrested two women involved in trafficking chitta (adulterated heroin) while they were attempting to flee to Canada from Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
Kangra Superintendent of Police Shalini Agnihotri stated that the arrests stemmed from an investigation launched after three youths were caught with narcotics in Dharamsala on January 21, 2025. Acting on a tip-off, a police team intercepted a car during a routine patrol that night and found 30 grams of chitta in possession of Shashank Bisht from Dehradun, Uttarakhand, along with Ayush and Savatang Shahi from Dharamsala. Following this, a case was registered at the Dharamsala police station, she added.
During interrogation, the accused revealed that they had procured the drugs from two women based in Punjab, identified as Kulwant Kaur and Germanpreet Kaur. Further investigation uncovered financial transactions totaling ₹4.50 lakh via UPI payments to the women’s bank accounts, confirming their role in the drug trade.
A technical analysis of their mobile phone data pinpointed their last known location near Delhi airport. Acting swiftly, a special police team was dispatched to Delhi on February 28, leading to their arrest inside the airport on March 3. The police also recovered their passports, confirming their plan to escape to Canada, Agnihotri said.
The women are currently being interrogated to expose the wider drug network and identify other associates. Police are also scrutinizing their financial records, properties, and bank accounts to track assets accumulated through drug smuggling, the SP added.
