Amazon Gains Full Creative Control Over James Bond Franchise
The James Bond franchise has officially come under the creative command of Amazon, marking a significant shift in the stewardship of the iconic spy series. Amazon MGM Studios announced on Thursday that it had reached an agreement with Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson—heirs to legendary Bond producer Albert “Cubby” Broccoli—granting the company full creative control over the 007 universe.
While the financial terms remain undisclosed, a spokesperson for Amazon confirmed that a joint venture has been established to house the James Bond intellectual property, with Amazon now in the driver’s seat. The deal paves the way for the long-anticipated next Bond film and opens doors for an array of potential spin-off TV series on Amazon Prime Video.
This agreement is unrelated to recent developments involving a Dubai-based property developer’s attempt to claim the James Bond trademark for various commercial ventures, a move recently uncovered by The Guardian.
A New Era for Bond
Amazon’s connection to the James Bond franchise began in 2022 when it acquired MGM for $8.5 billion, securing rights to distribute existing Bond films. However, this new agreement grants Amazon the authority to initiate new productions, breaking a creative deadlock that has left Bond fans waiting. Historically, Bond films were released with impressive regularity, with 16 films debuting between Dr. No (1962) and Licence to Kill (1989). However, recent years have seen longer gaps between releases, with the last film, No Time to Die (2021), marking the beginning of what is now set to become the longest hiatus in the franchise’s history.
With Wilson and Broccoli’s oversight now diminished, Amazon gains the freedom to expand Bond’s universe without their direct approval. As long-time protectors of the character’s legacy—originally conceived in 1953 by Ian Fleming—Wilson and Broccoli have been cautious about overextending the brand, resisting spin-offs that have become commonplace in modern franchise filmmaking.
The Legacy of Broccoli and Wilson
Michael G. Wilson, 83, has announced his retirement from producing Bond films, stating, “With my 007 career spanning nearly 60 incredible years, I am stepping back from producing to focus on art and charitable projects. Barbara and I agree that it is time for our trusted partner, Amazon MGM Studios, to lead James Bond into the future.”
Barbara Broccoli, 64, echoed his sentiment, saying, “My life has been dedicated to preserving and expanding upon the extraordinary legacy left to us by my father, Cubby Broccoli. I have had the privilege of working closely with four talented actors who have played 007 and countless brilliant artists in the industry. With the conclusion of No Time to Die and Michael stepping back, I feel it is time for me to focus on other projects.”
A daughter of the legendary Cubby Broccoli, Barbara Broccoli has been involved with the franchise since her youth, working in various roles before taking on her first full producer credit with GoldenEye (1995). Wilson, Broccoli’s stepbrother, initially trained as a lawyer before joining Eon Productions in 1972. He became an executive producer on Moonraker (1979) and later took over as producer with A View to a Kill (1985). Together, they transformed Bond into one of cinema’s most successful franchises, grossing over $7.8 billion worldwide—placing it behind only the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Spider-Man in terms of box office earnings.
The most successful Bond film to date remains Skyfall (2012), which grossed $1.1 billion worldwide.
The Future of 007
Unlike other major franchises that have embraced the trend of spin-offs and expanded universes—such as Star Wars and The Walking Dead—Eon Productions has been historically reluctant to dilute Bond’s legacy. A rare exception was 007: Road to a Million, a reality competition series produced for Amazon Prime Video, where contestants competed for a £1 million prize.
With Amazon at the helm, the future of James Bond is poised for transformation. Whether this results in an influx of new films and series or a reinvention of the franchise remains to be seen. However, one thing is clear: the world’s most famous spy is now operating under a new agency.
