Akal Takht Acting Jathedar Urges Reopening of Kartarpur Corridor

Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, the officiating Jathedar of the Akal Takht, has urged both the Indian and Pakistani governments to reopen the Kartarpur Corridor, emphasizing that its continued closure is unjustified now that regional tensions have subsided.

The Kartarpur Corridor, which allows Indian pilgrims to visit the revered Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara in Pakistan’s Narowal district, was shut on May 7 by India’s Ministry of Home Affairs, following military operations under ‘Operation Sindoor’. The closure, enforced by the Bureau of Immigration, came amid heightened tensions between the two nations.

Pakistan, however, chose to keep its side of the corridor open, calling it a "goodwill gesture."

Speaking on the matter, Giani Gargaj said that with a ceasefire now in place and tensions between the two countries having eased, there is no reason to continue the suspension of the corridor. “As the situation has normalised, the operations of Kartarpur Corridor should be resumed,” he said. “Reopening it would further contribute to peace, harmony, and improved ties between the two neighbouring nations.”

Highlighting the spiritual and emotional importance of the corridor for Sikhs, Giani Gargaj stressed that the region needs peace, progress, mutual respect, and cooperation far more than conflict. He also lauded both national and international leaders who have played constructive roles in easing hostilities and promoting dialogue.

Reopening the Kartarpur Corridor, he added, would be a symbolic and practical step toward restoring trust and goodwill between India and Pakistan.
