US Congresswoman Backs Canada and Mexico as Trump Faces Backlash
Texas Democrat Jasmine Crockett has unexpectedly declared her support for Canada and Mexico in their resistance against President Donald Trump’s aggressive maneuvers. Speaking on the Breakfast Club podcast on Friday, Crockett described the situation as “really wild” because it is foreign leaders, not Americans, who are standing up to what she calls Trump’s “crazy regime.” She emphasized that Canada and Mexico are the ones “speaking truth to power” while Trump continues his contentious policies.
Her comments followed sharp rebukes from both Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who recently confronted Trump’s threats. After the White House labeled Mexican drug cartels—groups that have long armed themselves with American-made guns—as terrorist organizations, Sheinbaum warned that any move to undermine Mexico’s sovereignty, whether by air, land, or sea, would be met with staunch resistance. “With Mexico, it is collaboration and coordination, never subordination or interventionism,” Sheinbaum stressed, adding that the Mexican people would never tolerate external intrusions into their national integrity.
Meanwhile, Trudeau hit back on social media after Trump’s offhand remark about a US hockey team that ended up losing a tournament final to a Canadian selection. Trudeau’s retort was clear: “You can’t take our country – and you can’t take our game.”
These international spats are part of a broader series of confrontations involving Trump’s administration, which has also targeted trade policies with steep tariff threats and even attempted to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” The Canadian and Mexican leaders have not shied away from challenging these unilateral actions, with Sheinbaum even threatening legal action against Google Maps for conforming to Trump’s directive.
Crockett did not mince words when addressing Trump’s supporters back home. Reminding voters of the Republican’s controversial past—including his conviction in New York on 34 felony counts related to hush-money payments to Stormy Daniels—she argued, “Y’all knew who he was when y’all elected him, so don’t act surprised.” She pointed out that despite these convictions and other unresolved legal issues, Trump was still able to secure another term by defeating his rival, Kamala Harris, in the 2016 election and later reclaiming the Oval Office in 2020.
Since taking office in early 2023, Crockett has quickly become a vocal progressive critic of Trump’s tactics. In early February, she joined fellow Democrats and hundreds of protesters in denouncing Trump’s so-called “department of government efficiency” (Doge) and its manipulation of federal financial systems. “We are not going to sit around while you go and desecrate our constitution,” she declared, promising relentless resistance.
However, a recent SurveyUSA poll of over 1,700 registered voters suggests that many Democrats remain skeptical about Congress’s ability to effectively counter Trump’s influence.
