Hundreds of thousands remain without power after cyclone batters east coast
Communities in southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales (NSW) are beginning recovery efforts after a powerful storm caused widespread flooding, toppled trees, and downed power lines over the weekend.
The extreme weather, triggered by Cyclone Alfred, left nearly 290,000 properties without electricity, with energy providers warning that blackouts could persist for days.
Fatalities and Rescue Efforts
The storm has already claimed at least one life. On Saturday, police recovered the body of a 61-year-old man who went missing after his car was swept away by floodwaters in Dorrigo, northern NSW. Emergency responders had seen the man escape his vehicle and cling to a tree, but floodwaters carried him away before a rescue could be made.
Meanwhile, a convoy of soldiers en route to assist with rescue operations crashed near Lismore, about 200km south of Brisbane. Twelve soldiers were hospitalized, with two in serious condition. NSW Premier Chris Minns wished them a speedy recovery.
Ongoing Weather Risks
Cyclone Alfred, initially a category two storm, weakened into a tropical depression before making landfall near Brisbane on Saturday night. However, authorities warn that hazardous conditions will persist.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese urged residents to remain cautious, emphasizing the continued risks of flash flooding, strong winds, and rough coastal conditions.
"The situation in Queensland and northern New South Wales remains very serious due to flash flooding and heavy winds," Albanese said on Sunday.
Emergency Response and Impact
Emergency services in Queensland and NSW have been inundated with more than 6,000 calls for assistance. Rescuers have carried out over a dozen operations, primarily saving people stranded in vehicles or homes due to rising floodwaters.
Despite the devastation, Queensland police confirmed that there have been no reported fatalities or missing persons in their state so far. However, with dangerous weather persisting, officials continue to urge caution.
Residents in affected areas are now bracing for more heavy rainfall and strong winds in the coming days as recovery efforts begin.
