Category Five Tropical Cyclone Zelia Set to Hit Western Australia with Devastating Winds

A powerful and destructive Category Five storm, Tropical Cyclone Zelia, is heading toward Western Australia's coast, bringing wind speeds of up to 320 km/h. Authorities have issued urgent warnings as the cyclone, expected to be at its most intense upon landfall, threatens severe damage and widespread disruption.

Cyclone Rapidly Intensifies Over Warm Waters

Severe Tropical Cyclone Zelia has rapidly strengthened since forming off the Western Australian coast. The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that the storm will likely maintain its peak intensity as it approaches land, fueled by warm ocean waters. It is expected to make landfall between Port Hedland and Roebourne on Friday evening, bringing flash flooding and destructive winds capable of leveling houses.

Meteorologist Miriam Bradbury explained that the cyclone was undergoing an eyewall replacement cycle on Thursday afternoon, a phenomenon observed only in the most intense storms. “These winds will obliterate everything in their path, including trees, roads, and even permanent structures,” she said.

Authorities Issue Urgent Warnings

WA Premier Roger Cook emphasized the severity of the situation. “This is a dangerous system. It’s large, it’s powerful, and it’s highly unpredictable. People in the Pilbara need to prepare immediately,” he urged.

Angus Hines, a senior meteorologist at the bureau, reinforced the gravity of the situation. “Category Five is the highest classification. It doesn’t get worse than this. These winds can destroy homes, uproot trees, and knock out power lines, causing significant damage and disruption,” he said.

Closures and Evacuations Underway

As a precaution, authorities have closed schools, roads, and ports in northern WA. About a dozen schools in the region have already shut down, with more closures anticipated. The Great Northern Highway is expected to be closed, and an evacuation center has been established in South Hedland to shelter residents in vulnerable areas.

Tropical Cyclone Zelia is currently about 140 km north of Port Hedland. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services commissioner, Darren Klemm, has described it as a significant threat to lives and property. He cautioned that even if the cyclone does not make direct landfall, its impact will still be severe.

Region Braces for Impact

The warning zone extends from Wallal Downs to Dampier, covering key towns such as Port Hedland, Karratha, and Dampier, as well as inland to Marble Bar. Heavy rainfall is already being recorded across the Kimberley and Pilbara, with feeder bands of storms delivering torrential downpours.

A cyclone watch and act warning has been issued for areas from Eighty Mile Beach to Whim Creek and inland to Marble Bar. Authorities are urging residents to take immediate action to protect their lives and homes.

“This cyclone poses a direct threat,” officials warned. “People must be ready to shelter and take necessary precautions as the storm approaches.”

With the storm intensifying and the clock ticking, Western Australia is bracing for one of the most powerful cyclones in recent history.
