Sikh Community in Navi Mumbai Opposes SGPC’s Jathedar Appointments, Calls for Reinstatement of Previous Leaders

The Sikh community in Navi Mumbai and Maharashtra has strongly opposed the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee’s (SGPC) recent decision regarding the appointment of jathedars. In a letter addressed to the SGPC, the Supreme Council of Navi Mumbai Gurdwaras has demanded the immediate reinstatement of previously appointed jathedars and the rejection of what they describe as politically influenced appointments.

Concerns Over Appointment Process

The community has raised serious concerns over the legitimacy and procedure for appointing and removing jathedars. They argue that such decisions must align with Gurmat traditions and Panthic sentiments. Additionally, they have urged the SGPC to implement a transparent selection process, ensuring that all Sikh organizations, including Sant Samaj, Nihang Singh sects, and Panthic intellectuals, are consulted before any final decisions are made.

Jaspal Singh Sidhu, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Navi Mumbai Gurdwaras, stated, “The SGPC’s decision has faced widespread criticism, with many perceiving it as an attempt to weaken the authority of Akal Takht Sahib.”

Warning of Opposition and Protests

The community has warned that if the SGPC fails to uphold Panthic interests, there could be strong opposition, including peaceful protests and Panthic boycotts.

Sidhu further emphasized that the Sikh Sangat has long regarded the SGPC as the highest authority on Panthic matters. However, recent decisions have eroded trust in its leadership, leading to urgent calls for corrective measures to restore the sanctity of Sri Akal Takht Sahib and other Takhts.
