Shiromani Akali Dal Condemns Police Action Against Farmers, Demands Explanation from CM Mann

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Wednesday strongly criticized the police action against protesting farmers, demanding an explanation from Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for what they called an insulting treatment of farmers during a recent meeting.

Senior SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema accused the Chief Minister of inviting farmers for talks only to walk out when confronted about unfulfilled promises made to them.

Double Standards in Treatment of Farmers vs. Kejriwal

Addressing the media, Cheema pointed out a stark contrast in the treatment of different groups by the Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. While AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal was being given a “red carpet welcome” for his 10-day meditation retreat in Hoshiarpur, farmers were barred from entering the state capital to voice their grievances.

Cheema questioned Mann’s preferential treatment of Kejriwal, stating, "The CM must explain why Kejriwal is being accorded a welcome fit for a head of state when he holds no constitutional authority in Punjab."

Unmet Promises to Farmers

The SAD leader further accused the Mann government of failing to deliver on key promises made to Punjab's farmers, including:

  • Minimum support price (MSP) for moong and maize
  • Compensation for repeated crop losses

Instead of addressing these concerns, Cheema alleged that the Chief Minister was trying to distract the public by launching anti-corruption and anti-drug campaigns.

Allegations of Institutionalized Corruption and Drug Nexus

Cheema also accused the AAP government of fostering institutionalized corruption and turning a blind eye to the political nexus in the drug trade, which he claimed has led to a sharp rise in drug-related deaths across Punjab.

The SAD has demanded that the Punjab government take immediate action to address farmers’ grievances rather than suppressing their voices through force.
