SGPC Chief Slams Centre Over Delay in Release of Sikh Prisoners, Calls It Violation of Human Rights

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami has sharply criticised the Indian government for what he described as an insensitive and unjust approach towards the release of Sikh prisoners, commonly referred to as Bandi Singhs.

Calling the delay a violation of human rights, Dhami said the SGPC has been consistently working to secure the release of these prisoners, many of whom have already served long sentences. “The central government’s negative and indifferent stance has not only obstructed justice but also disrespects the core values of fairness and human dignity,” he said.

Dhami expressed frustration over the Centre’s repeated refusal to engage in dialogue. “We have been seeking a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi for over a year and a half to discuss this pressing issue, yet there has been no positive response,” he said.

He pointed out that the Akal Takht, the highest temporal authority of Sikhs, had formed a five-member committee to pursue the cases of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana and other long-serving Sikh prisoners. Despite their formal request to meet the Prime Minister in December 2023, the committee was recently informed on March 21, 2025, that the request was declined. The Centre cited that the matter is under the purview of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), offering no further clarity or commitment.

Dhami criticised the prolonged delay in Bhai Rajoana’s case, especially when the Supreme Court had already provided directives on the matter. While the Prime Minister’s Office reportedly directed the issue to the Home Minister, the MHA has yet to provide a constructive response.

“The case of Bhai Rajoana and other Sikh prisoners is not just a legal matter—it’s an emotional and religious concern deeply tied to the Sikh community’s sentiments,” Dhami said. He stressed the importance of ensuring justice without political bias or delay, warning that continued indifference could deepen the sense of alienation among Sikhs.

SGPC officials including Bhai Rajinder Singh Mehta, Gurmeet Singh Booh, and OSD Satbir Singh Dhami were present during Dhami’s statement. The SGPC continues to urge the central government to act in the spirit of justice and compassion.
