SAD (Amritsar) Urges SGPC to Act on Bhagtanwala Garbage Dump Pollution Near Golden Temple
The Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) has called for the intervention of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to address the severe air pollution caused by the Bhagtanwala garbage dumping site in Amritsar. The party claims that the pollution is affecting the sanctity and environment of the city’s holy sites, including the Golden Temple.
SAD (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann submitted a formal memorandum to SGPC secretary Partap Singh, highlighting the impact of the dumping site, which is located just 1.5 km from the Golden Temple. Mann stated that frequent fires at the site often burn for days, releasing thick smoke and toxins that contribute to significant air pollution. This pollution, he claimed, is damaging the temple’s iconic gold plating and affecting the marble structures.
He noted that due to the pollution, the SGPC has had to hire specialists from the United Kingdom to clean and preserve the shrine’s gold and marble surfaces.
Mann also expressed appreciation to the SGPC for passing a resolution in its recent general house meeting, condemning Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks in Parliament regarding Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his perceived mockery of Gurbani recitation.
Additionally, Mann raised concerns over alleged extrajudicial killings both in India and abroad, claiming these acts were carried out with the involvement or knowledge of governmental authorities.
