Punjab Govt Limits Tenure of Police Munshis to Two Years in Anti-Corruption Push

Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema on Monday announced a new policy capping the tenure of Munshi Head Constables (MHCs), commonly known as 'munshis', to a maximum of two years at a single police station. The move is part of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s broader anti-corruption campaign.

Cheema said the decision was aimed at curbing corruption within the police force, as extended postings were believed to increase the risk of unethical practices. As part of the initiative, 191 munshis who had been stationed at the same police stations for more than two years were transferred on Monday.

The measure mirrors a similar action taken in June last year by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, when nearly 10,000 police personnel posted in border districts were transferred amid concerns over potential links with drug smugglers. However, many of those officers were later reinstated to their original posts.

Drawing comparisons, Cheema also referenced the government's earlier crackdown on corruption in the revenue department, targeting officials such as Tehsildars and Patwaris who were allegedly involved in malpractices. He said the latest action sends a clear message that the government remains committed to rooting out corruption across departments.
