Punjab to Recruit 2,500 Teaching Staff to Address Shortage in Government Schools

Chandigarh – The Punjab Education Department is set to recruit 2,000 Physical Training Instructors (PTIs) and 500 lecturers in an effort to address the shortage of teaching staff in government schools, Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains announced on Wednesday. The advertisements for the positions will be released shortly.

The PTIs will be appointed specifically for primary schools across the state. Punjab currently has around 12,880 government primary schools, many of which have long faced a shortage of physical education staff.

In addition to the new recruitment drive, the department is also finalizing the issuance of appointment letters to Elementary Teacher Training (ETT) teachers who were previously recruited. Following directions from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the selection list for ETT teachers has been revised.

Democratic Teachers’ Front (DTF) state president Vikram Dev Singh noted that the recruitment process for 5,994 ETT teachers began in 2022 but has yet to be fully completed. So far, approximately 2,600 appointment letters have been issued, personally handed out by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

The education department aims to expedite the remaining appointments to strengthen the teaching workforce and improve education standards across the state's government schools.
