Mortal Remains of Gurpreet Singh Sent to Punjab as Rescue Efforts Continue for Seven Others

The mortal remains of Gurpreet Singh, who was recovered from the partially collapsed SLBC tunnel, have been sent to his native village in Punjab. Meanwhile, rescue operations are still underway to locate the remaining seven trapped workers.

Gurpreet Singh, a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) operator for Robbins Co, was among the eight individuals trapped when a section of the tunnel collapsed on February 22.

Following a postmortem and other formalities at Nagarkurnool civil hospital, his body was transported in a special ambulance, official sources confirmed. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has announced an ex-gratia of ₹25 lakh for his family.

Singh’s body was recovered after an intense 48-hour excavation effort, with rescuers carefully digging through silt that had buried him nearly 10 feet deep. His identification was confirmed through an earring on his left ear lobe and a tattoo on his right hand.

The search continues for the remaining trapped workers, identified as Manoj Kumar (Uttar Pradesh), Sunny Singh (Jammu & Kashmir), another Gurpreet Singh (Punjab), and Sandeep Sahu, Jegta Xess, and Anuj Sahu, all from Jharkhand.

The eight individuals, a mix of engineers and laborers, became trapped inside the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) project tunnel when a section collapsed. Rescue efforts are being carried out relentlessly by teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indian Army, Navy, and other specialized agencies, working around the clock to bring them to safety.
